Safeguarding your Instagram Account

Oct 27, 2022

Welcome to another October Tips & Tricks!

Safeguarding your Instagram Account

There are millions of people on Instagram using it to promote their businesses these days.

Personally I prefer Instagram to Facebook which is why I've ended up here but like with all social media there are tricks to staying out of trouble with your account!

Here are five easy things you can do to help safeguard and protect your Instagram account.

1. Note down your Account Information

Make a note of all your account info in a safe place - username, password, email address, phone number, birthday, address—any information that's associated with your Instagram account. This all proves that the account belongs to you, should you end up in a position where Instagram requires you to verify your ownership of the account. I suggest you keep this information in the same place as you keep all the the other information that pertains to your Instagram content—makes it easier to find!

2. Turn on 2FA

Turn on 2-factor authentication using multiple options—Google Authenticator, text message and email. This way, if you don't have access to one of your devices, you can use a different method to authenticate your account.

3. Generate Backup Codes

The Instagram app allows you to generate Backup Codes that you can use in case you lose access to any of the above authentication options. Keep them in the same safe place as your account info.

4. Connect a Facebook account to your Instagram account

Create a Facebook profile with a Facebook business page for your business and connect your Instagram account to the business page through the Meta Business Suite. This helps with posting and responding to comments on posts or DMs. You also have backend access to security settings that you can use to prove ownership should you need to.

5. Allow Cross-App Login

Turn on the option that allows log in from one app to the other. This means if you lose the ability to log into the Instagram app with your own login information, you can log into it through FB and hopefully get everything straightened out.

Also, always take great care when changing things on your profile like phone number or email address and make sure it is valid contact information for you that you can verify!!! I cannot stress how important this is!
